The aging face can make us look tired and older than the years we feel. Gravity works against the features, pulling them down and deepening lines. But what is it that makes the face look older?
This statue of President John Adams on the left has been given a "facelift, neck lift, and upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery."
Move your mouse over the image to the left to explore the various elements of facial aging.
Upper Eyelids:
Aging upper eyelids tend to sag and droop. Fat behind the muscles can become prominent. As these tissues age, they can obscure the upper tarsal fold. With worsening, the tissues can rest on the eyelashes and eventually obscure vision. Such hooding of the upper eyelids can become uncomfortable with fatigue and as the day wears on.To see real patients who have had blepharoplasty surgery click on the blue highlighted region.
The lower eyelids.
Blepharoplasty surgery restores the eyelids to a more youthful appearance. Notice the difference before and after surgery in this region. Here the sagging fat was addressed, the lid tightened, and the muscles and skin restored to a more youthful proportions.Learn about blepharoplasty eyelid surgery by clicking on the blue highlighted region on the image.
The region under the chin.
With aging, fat accumulates here. The muscle of facial expression of the neck (platysma) can also spread apart. With an incision under the chin, the extra fat can be removed and the muscle division repaired.Explore neck lift surgery with platysma muscle repair by clicking on the blue highlighted region.
The Cheek and Malar Regions:
With aging the tissues over the cheeks can fall. In this "Extended SMAS facelift" example, the malar prominence has been restored. The deeper facial animation layer (SMAS) and skin have been returned to their more youthful positions.Click on the blue highlighted region to see real patients of Dr. Bermant and their surgical results for SMAS extended facelift surgery.

Jowls:
Redundant skin under the jaw line are features of the aging face. This is one of the earliest signs of looking older. In the "operated" side, the extra fat has been removed and the face and neck lifted.Lean how facelift surgery lifts the facial animation layer (SMAS) and skin by clicking on the highlighted jowl region.
