Photos for Breast Reduction Mammaplasty
Dr. Bermant evaluates patients from around the world. We try to make this process easier with a preliminary remote package. That way our patients can feel comfortable with us before traveling to Richmond. You will need to fill out forms, provide us information about your concerns and pictures. These images can be in JPEG or JPG compressed format or actual photographs. (You will need to include return postage if you want the actual photographs returned). There is a fee for this preliminary evaluation.
Fill the image with the chest and breast(s).
It is very difficult to analyze the breast on an image that includes the entire body. Detail is lost if the important information occupies only a small part of the frame. The chest is also important to evaluate size.
Focus the camera.
The chest / breast are what should be most in focus. You may need to take the camera off of its automatic setting to get the nipple in focus.
Choose your background carefully.
Pick an uncluttered background with no mirrors. A mirror or glass surface can reflect a flash and make photographs difficult to evaluate. A plain matte background is best.
If using flash, point the flash so that the shadows do not obscure the important breast outline. This is done by having camera mounted flash on the same side as the breast and the camera towards the body. This is not as great a concern when no flash is used.
Standard views for the female breasts include:
- Left Oblique - has the film plane parallel to the long plane of the breast from the front, both breasts and chest filling most of the picture. This may include the stomach.
- Right Oblique - has the film plane parallel to the long plane of the breast from the front, both breasts and chest filling most of the picture. This may include the stomach.
- Front Arms Down - showing entire chest and both Breasts
- Front Arms Up - showing entire chest and both Breasts

The photos must include AT LEAST as much as in these images. The view should extend from the neck to the abdomen.
Avoid background clutter. Try to pick something behind you that does not detract from the chest. The images should be in focus - blurred details are difficult to evaluate.

If the nipples are part of the problem, you need to show images that have enough details. Please see standard photographs for nipple problems.
If there is something you feel is best demonstrated by a specific different view, please include that detail. We are interested in your concerns.
Images only show up so much detail and do not replace the in office examination and evaluation. Dr. Bermant needs to feel and observe the tissue:
- breast mass and nature of this tissue
- any excess fat
- how loose / tight
- how it moves
- how elastic
- scars
- possible numb or sensitive areas
Ask our office about the prices for our preliminary evaluation packages where we evaluate images, medical history, and have a preliminary telephone discussion before traveling see us. The best way to find out what plastic surgery has to offer is with an in office consultation and evaluation. That way we can learn about your medical condition, evaluate the deformity, propose the various options, and discuss the relative risks and benefits of the alternate methods of care.
