Breast Reduction Mammaplasty
56 year old female could no longer tolerate her large sagging breasts. She complained about neck and back pain that worsened with activity. Her left arm would go numb when placed in certain positions pressing against her breasts. She also had grooving from her bra straps that would dig into her shoulder. During the summer she had problems with rashes under each breast.
5 feet 3 inch tall and weighed 155 pounds and wore 40DD bra.
Location surgery: Hospital operating room
Anesthesia: General with wet technique fluid infiltration
Technique: Superior Medial Pedicle with lateral and medial pillar tightening and Regnault type "B" shortened scar
Stay: Ambulatory surgery up to 23 hour package.

Short scar surgery tries to limit the length of the incisions and avoid the central chest region. A vertical short scar technique only has the round section around the areola and a line going down to the breast chest fold. Redundant wrinkled skin can take weeks to months to equilibrate and become smooth. With the B type incision, a horizontal incision goes towards the armpits. This permits an even draping of skin as these early photographs demonstrate.

This patient had wet technique breast reduction minimizing pain after surgery. She asked for no pain medication the day of surgery and only one oral pill before discharge from her less than 23 hour hospital stay. Although given a prescription for pain medication for home, she did not have it filled and only used Tylenol. Each patient has different levels of discomfort after surgery, but the wet technique seems to result in a much more comfortable patient.
