Matching contours and blending the concha and anthelix cartilage components after reduction otoplasty.
Removing a section of ear often leaves regions that do not perfectly match when approximated. Sculpture of the remaining elements permits an even transition. This requires an artistic skill with tissues.

Concha and Anthelix Repair sculpture matches the cartilage and skin elements. |
This patient's ear had a good average projection from the scalp. A back wall reduction would bring the back of the ear too close to the head. Macrotia otoplasty requires a selection of the right techniques for each patient.

Sutures mold the conchal bowl reapproximating the cartilage along a natural ridge. This can sometimes require some fine shaping of the cartilage starting from the front and working towards the back.

Macrotia otoplasty photograph of the upper anthelix as it is sculpted to match the lower part of this cartilage. |
As the antihelix is restored, there can be a difference between a larger upper section and a smaller lower part that requires transition. Sometimes it requires sutures behind the upper ear increasing the fold for the match. To look at before and after pictures of this patient, start here.
