Congenital Eyelid Ptosis in a 26 year old black male.
(Drooping of upper eyelid)

This 26 year old male was born with inability to open both eyes very well. The difficulty was bad enough to warrant surgery at the age of 9 on only the right lid. He came to Dr. Bermant complaining of:

  • "lazy" drooping eyelids obstructing his vision
  • difficulty at work keeping both his eyes open
  • constantly looking tired all the time
  • having to tilt his head back to see
  • problem worsening over the years

You can see his scar from his earlier surgery on the before surgery photos. The crease on the right eyelid was placed too high by the other surgeon.

This patient's reconstruction included:

  • Shortening of the levator muscle of 18mm on the left.
  • Shortening of the levator muscle 24mm on the right.
  • Adjustment of right eyelid crease to a more natural position.

The surgery was done under local anesthesia with sedation as an outpatient. Sedation and local anesthesia permit cooperation during the operation to adjust the eyelid muscles with a greater degree of accuracy.

    This patient's measurements Right Left
    Preoperative Ptosis 4mm 3mm
    Levator Function Preop 5mm 7mm
After Surgery no Ptosis 0mm 0mm
