The Skin Expander

The round valve to the left was placed under the skin by the ear. The connecting tube and expander were also placed under the skin. The valve allowed a needle to inflate the expander through the skin.

nasal reconstruction skin expander

The skin expander is a silicone balloon. Placed under the skin and filled with saline (salt water), it expands the skin with each injection through the valve. The expanded skin is then used to rebuild the nose. Without the skin expansion, this patient's forehead would have been too short for this method of plastic surgery nose reconstruction.
