The Surgery
Rhinoplasty surgery is the name for a group of operations. Each component is chosen and modified for your specific nose and what you want to achieve. The question is what do you want? There are beautiful features in every nose. Helping you explore the positives and discussing the modifications of the negatives are essential parts of the rhinoplasty consultation. Learning surgical limitations is important in order to develop realistic expectations.

The Black Ethnic Nose
Balance and harmony are universal elements of beauty that transcend racial boundaries. Public education, racial awareness and new surgical techniques have increased the demands for rhinoplasty surgery in black patients. Thicker skin and a wide variation in anatomical proportions makes this surgery challenging. In general this nose has:

• nasal bridge (dorsum of nose)
  • wide
  • depressed
  • low radix (lowest point of nose between the eyes)
• nasal tip
  • gentle flat curve
  • low (not projecting)
• nasal ala (tissue around nostrils)
  • wide
  • flared
  • increased inter alar width
• short nasal length
• acute angle between the lip and columella (support between the nostrils)
• elevated cheeks

Here is one patient who complained that her nasal features were out of harmony. The dorsal hump bothered her.

The dorsal hump had an unusual wide depression between it and the tip of her nose. Notice the flattened broad nasal tip and exaggerated flare of the ala.

She wanted the wide ala to not dominate her look but still retain her ethnic beauty. Notice how after surgery their width as well as the boney width are more balanced for her face.

Seen from below the chances are dramatic. As the interalar width was reduced, the tip came up.
