The nose sticks out from the face increasing the chance of injury. Other than trauma, the operated nose needs time to heal. Protection needs of the nose depends on the nature of the injury, what support remains, the activity, and how that individual heals. The injury may only have been skin and or nasal lining (mucosa). Supporting elements may have been torn (laceration), broken, surgically altered (rhinoplasty), or reconstructed after cancer or trauma. There is already tension on nasal tissues to keep the nose sticking up away from the face. Injured tissues may compromise this support. Until the nose heals, structures will not tolerant undue stress. Vigorous activity may be just too much for a repair distorting alignment. Each injury has its own healing time best explored with the doctor caring for that problem. Dr. Bermant can help design a return to activity for his own patients, not those under some other doctor's care. He is also not able to help with local referrals or finding local prosthetic designers. When the structures are almost ready for certain activities, protection may be appropriate. Well paid sports figures may have different goals to tolerant risks for deformity to be able to perform before healing. Protection comes in different forms. Each is best designed for the specific person and problem. Generic patterns may not suit the specific needs of the weakened structures. We can help plan such protection for those under our care, ask your own doctor for solutions appropriate to your situation. The transparent face mask seen on TV by basketball players for facial protection is made by a special plastic that needs heat to soften during the molding process. This thermoplastic needs to be too hot for the facial skin during its fitting. A mold is made of the face and the plastic fitted to that form. The mold is either made from a pouring compound onto the face or by computer aided design. Unlike the burn article of this link (or this one), the pressure areas need to be designed to protect the weakened structures. Final fitting is important for comfort. The needs of the weakened facial structures must part of the design. We need to evaluate any patient in an office consultation before referring to a local Richmond prosthetist. Otherwise work through your own doctor. A local prosthetic designer who deals with burns often has the tools for such protection. Generic protection may have its uses. Hockey Protection Hockey helmets can be fitted with a face shield.
Plastic Nasal Protection Custom made nasal protection can be expensive. Here is an article that outlines the steps. Plastic strong enough to protect this area requires too high a temperature for the skin to tolerate during molding. A mold needs to be made of the face first, areas built up where pressure must be relieved, and then the plastic fitted to the mold.
